The Weather
Well, today is a fun example of the new normal… Vermont is under flash flood warnings for the next 24 hours. Yes, that is all of Vermont. Many towns are being evacuated. Yes, whole towns. My garage had 3 inches of standing water this morning. It got up to about 5 inches before I got home from work. I’ve managed to block the garage doors so that water can flow out the ridiculously tiny 4″ drain faster than it can flow in under the doors. So now it’s starting to drain.
However, water is also flowing into my basement. Down the walls. I have an old foundation. Not field stone, but close. So when the ground is this saturated, water just runs in between the blocks. So that’s fun. I’ve moved things to the highest levels and have tried to block the largest cracks with silicon goo. Not working well because everything is wet, but it’s better than it was.
I’m trying very hard not to panic. Luckily, Son#1 is here… because his town was evacuated and is now literally submerged. His apartment is probably fine, but there is undoubtedly water in his building now. But it is good for both of us to not be alone. We’re going to eat popcorn and watch Noah.
This rain system is being compared to Hurricane Irene in 2011. Only… there is no tropical storm associated with this weather. It’s just a warm and wet and slow cell that is covering much of New England and western New York. We’re under severe weather alerts until Tuesday.
I think Vermont needs anti-rain dances performed on our behalf.
