When I chose this week’s word prompt, I thought that the spring planting would be nearing completion. Silly me… I have nearly everything yet to do. And we have one more potential frost to dodge on Thursday, so the work is paused. Mostly in the upstairs guest bedroom where the tomatoes are thinking about flowering already. Cheeky little upstarts…
So, as usual, the Flower Moon is not shining on the culmination of my labors. I suppose I should just get used to planting in June.
In any case, here’s the Wednesday Word…
The Wednesday Word
for 20 May 2026
culmination
What does culmination mean to you? Think about it. If you’d like, send me a quick poem or story… or just a few thoughts. If you really have something to say, maybe enter my Wednesday Word contest on AllPoetry.
And now here are the thoughts that arise in me when I think on culmination…

… and she opened her petals to the sun
once she drowsed
in her mother’s dark womb
curled in embryonic serenity
a halting thought of becoming
but rushing spring
flushed her from comfort
cleaving dream
into kaleidoscopic prospect
she became changeful
potentiality
unfurling futures
then casting them off
as so much chaff
reaching aching climbing striving
she grew new limbs
burst through limitations
to fly up into the light
and blinking sunbeam tears
she laughed at whimsical fate
that here was an idea
made uniquely whole and holy
with nectar enough
to feed the gods
beguiling butterflies and bees
bewitching the wanton moon
with her beauty
in the crowning flowering of many labors
she stood proudly singular
and she opened her petals to the sun
… only to wilt
a little
for newfound lack of direction
they say you can see the future
from the pinnacle
and it is all downhill
to that quiet equanimity
that awaits like an embrace
but the culmination
— though we sing lauds
to the blooming climax —
is only half the journey
